Human presence in Qatar can be traced back to pre-historic times. Today, Qatar’s economy is soaring due the oil industry and its GDP is one of the best in the world. Tourism also plays a very large role in this small nation’s economy. Almost entirely surrounded by the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Bahrain, ESL teachers should be sure to experience the seemingly endless beaches.
It should be remembered that Qatar is an Islamic state, although the laws that govern everyday social interaction are more relaxed in comparison to other countries in the region, such as Saudi Arabia and Iran. Qatar is also a dry state, but liquor is available. That said, drinking alcohol (or being drunk) in public can lead to problems, and teachers should be aware of local laws and customs.
